Dad - To the man larger than life

Father’s day is approaching with less than a week away. Despite always falling on the third Sunday in June (18^th), many of us tend to overlook this important occasion, being always so very busy. Alas, don’t stress, we at MYKU got you covered!

Let’s get the facts first. Oxford Dictionary defines Father’s day as “A day of the year on which fathers are particularly honored by their children”. It goes on stating “It was first observed in the state of Washington in 1910”.

Note however that Father’s day dates back far longer to the Middle Ages of Catholic Europe. It was celebrated as the Catholic feast day of Saint Joseph since the late 14^th century. These old traditions were brought to the US by the Spanish and Portuguese and then officially inaugurated in the early 20th century to complement Mother's Day by celebrating fathers and male parenting.

What’s most interesting is that, despite being internationally observed, every country has its own ways of celebrating Father’s Day.

In China, Father’s day used to be celebrated on August 8, as the Chinese government wanted to honor the soldiers who died in WWII. It originally fell on 8.8., the eighth (ba) day of the eighth (ba) month, forms ba-ba (八八), which sounds like the Chinese word for dad, ba-ba (爸爸).

Germans celebrate Father’s day on the 40^th day after Easter (Ascension day) usually with outdoor activities and in good German tradition with a lot of beer and food. Prost!

In Russia, instead of Father’s day, The Defender of the Fatherland Day is celebrated on February 23^rd, continuing Soviet Union’s tradition.

In Thailand, the birthday of the king (December 5^th) is set as Father’s day. Thais will wear yellow on this day to show respect for the late king, because yellow is the color to represent Monday, as this was the day the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej was born.

No matter how differently we all celebrate this special day, we all honor our Dads or someone like Dad who looked after us at some point in our lives.

A father is someone who we look up to and receive guidance from. Often later in life, they progress from the role of a caretaker and become a friend, someone we ask for advice and a shoulder we can lean on for support.

And even after Dad is gone, many of us still think and are led by the thought “What would Dad do?”, that comforting feeling that we’re doing the right thing.
